We all want to make data-informed decisions and know we need to move beyond transactional data to do so. Many of us have invested in technology (data warehouse, data lake, analytic tools, etc.) but find ourselves unable to provide value quickly to our community. If we aren’t providing the data or the tools to analyze it, users will find a way to do so. How do we balance the need and demand for data analytics with the need to “govern” it? Is there a way we can quickly provide real value to our users while also improving data quality and ensuring security and privacy? Using the concept of Data Governance Ops (DGOps) proposed by Laura Madsen in Disrupting Data Governance, Berry College has been able to use an iterative process to implement a data lake, data warehouse, create data sets, provide dashboards and reports, establish a Center of Excellence and begin the process of Data Governance, all within 9 months. Berry is utilizing the Power BI suite as our data analytics tool and we have been following Microsoft’s Adoption Roadmap which includes an iterative governance rollout that equally prioritizes agility and governance.
