Presentation Title
Approaches to AI Adoption on Campus: Two Case Studies
Session Time
10:00 AM
Location
Dogwood
Brief Presentation Description
AI is becoming a strategic imperative in higher education, but many institutions are still in the early stages of figuring out what that means for their campus operations, academic integrity policies, and IT infrastructure. In fact, according to the 2024 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study, 11% of respondents said that their institution has NO AI-related strategy at all. Part of the issue with AI adoption stems from the fact that there are no guidelines for AI implementation. As demand for AI grows, IT leaders are being asked to take the lead on projects that may not have clear roadmaps, consensus, or long-standing precedents.

This session will provide institutions with roadmaps and precedents for AI adoption on campus. It will begin by framing the AI landscape, and then two institutional leaders—CIO Mimi Royston (from American International College) and Director of IT Matt Sullivan (Tennessee Wesleyan University) —will share how their institutions are navigating AI adoption. Mimi will begin by explaining AIC’s “start small and scale” approach, which began by implementing an AI Chatbot to build on measurable wins. Matt will follow up by explaining Tennessee Wesleyan’s multi-committee approach to ensuring governance, policy-making, and cross-departmental alignment.

Together, these case studies offer contrasting—but complementary—approaches to AI implementation, giving attendees a 360-degree view of what’s possible.

The session will conclude with audience interaction and with a set of actionable takeaways, including:
•How to launch pilot AI projects to demonstrate value and generate buy-in.
•How to build cross-functional committees to define ethical use and governance.
•How to align AI projects with student success initiatives and strategic priorities.
•How to communicate effectively with stakeholders at varying levels of tech fluency.
•How to manage cultural change and set realistic timelines.
